This was a long day for Landmarq, beginning early on the morning of Sunday 15th - the day of the gig. In fact, from the time the band arranged to meet at Steve Leigh's house (7:00am) to the time they arrived back home to Steve Leigh's house, on the following Monday afternoon (3:00pm), meant that this was actually a 32-hour day - with precious little sleep in between!
But that was OK because this turned out to be a helluva gig....
After a couple of initial hiccups on the English end, the band finally made it across to Oostende where they were pleased to find the gig a mere stones-throw away from the sea-front/ferry port; the hotel was, in turn, a mere stones-throw away from the gig. A good few beers would be drunk this night...!

On stage at Paulusfeesten, Aug 99 Regular Landmarq sound engineer, Steve Rispin, was unable to make the gig due to his passport being recently stolen (hiccup no. 1). However, he reliably informed us that another sound-man -  Richard Dixon - a good friend of his, would be able to do the job instead. Unfortunately, Richard missed the deadline to meet up with the band on Sunday morning (hiccup no. 2) and subsequently had to make his own way across the water to the gig on a later ferry crossing. He finally turned up back-stage late that afternoon, much to the relief of the rest of the band, and it must be said that he made a superb job of managing Landmarq's sound; especially given the fact that he didn't know the band and was not entirely familiar with their music. Thanks mate!

Thanks must also go to Jan Buddenburg, Landmarq's ever-reliable 'roadie/gopher/minder/all-round good bloke' without whom.... etc., etc. Thanks to you too, mate!

This was the first time Landmarq had played at the outdoor 'Paulusfeesten' and realizing it was a week-long festival of a vast range of types of music (from Blues to Jazz-Fusion to World Music to Rock to....) they were a little unsure of how the reaction would be from an expected mainly non-progressive crowd. However, their fears were soon dismissed when even their sound-check a couple of hours before the gig received some promising cheers and applause.
Following the sound-check, all that remained was for everyone to get some food and drink and just 'chill out' before show-time.
At this point we must extend our grateful thanks to Joeri, Peter, Marleen and all the organisers/ helpers, etc., of the festival, who made us very welcome and had obviously worked very hard to make the whole thing come together. Thanks guys!

Show-time arrived and Landmarq finally took the stage, opening with a very moody and atmospheric re-arrangement of 'Solitary Witness'. From the crowd's resounding reaction at the end of the number, it seemed that landmarq were about to make some new friends. In fact, quite a few new friends as the crowd was estimated at around 1,000+ people. (Well, this was a free open-air festival, after all!). Other songs that were particularly well-received included 'Lighthouse', old favourites 'Pinewood Avenue' and 'Borders', 'Science Of Coincidence' and 'Summer Madness'. The whole place had a great party atmosphere and Landmarq went on to play a full hour-and-a-half set (15 minutes over the original set time). A few CD's and T-shirts were sold and autographs were signed; their were definitely some new friends made that night....
Suffice it to say, the band were delighted with the whole gig and spent the rest of the night drinking, talking, drinking, eating, drinking and watching the remaining acts do their stuff. And drinking! (Ah, that Belgian beer!).

For those that were not able to make it to this gig (and indeed, other Landmarq gigs) there is always 'Part 1' of the as-yet untitled forthcoming live album. Of course, those people who have seen Landmarq live will, naturally, be rushing out to buy their own copy also just as soon as it is released! :-)
