BORDERLINES
Spring 1999 Extra

Hi and welcome to another ‘Borderlines’ newsletter.

In the last newsletter, it was reported that a possible trip back to Europe might be possible for Landmarq around April ’99. Well, here we are in April (at the time of writing at least) and the only thing we can guarantee are the typical April showers that remind us that Summer is not here quite yet! Of course, we shall return and try to cover more territory into the bargain. It will, hopefully, be later in the year. Needless to say – we’ll keep you informed.

LANDMARQ LIVE CD TO BE RELEASED IN 1999

At last, after 8 years and 4 albums, it looks as if there will finally be a live album from Landmarq. Following various recordings taken from each of the bands concerts during 1998/99, it is hoped a general composite of the best of these shows will make up the overall content of the CD. Also on the album will be new arrangements of some of the older material, favourites of which include: ‘Solitary Witness’, ‘Pinewood Avenue’, ‘Tailspin’ and an instrumental medley consisting of excerpts from ‘Cutting Room’, ‘Killing Fields’, ‘Ta Jiang’ and ‘Narovlya’. The band agreed that: "we felt it was about time we had some official record of our live performances, especially given that we like to re-arrange certain songs for live purposes". Longer-established fans of Landmarq may find this of particular interest in regard to how the band has treated the older material. No release date has been set but re-mixing, etc., looks set to take place in the next three months or so with a release soon after.

GIG REPORT
The Hermit Club - Brentwood, Essex, UK - Friday 5 March 1999

SETLIST:
Cutting Room Instrumental Excerpt; The Vision Pit; Heritage; Lighthouse; Tailspin; More Flames For The Dancer; Between Sleeping And Dreaming / Reprise; Medley: Ta Jiang / Norovlya; Solitary Witness; Science Of Coincidence; The Overlook; Summer Madness.
Encore: Pinewood Avenue.

Following on from the recent London Astoria gig, Landmarq were looking forward to this show as it would give them the opportunity to play a longer set and include some re-worked favourites from previous albums as well as the newer material from "Science…". Honourable mention should firstly be made of Jeanette Murphy, who came along with sound engineer Steve Rispin and agreed to play a short set of her own songs. Accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, Jeanette was very well-received by the audience, who were not expecting any support act.

Landmarq then took to the stage and immediately settled into an introduction of the opening of 'Cutting Room' which then segued into 'The Vision Pit'. The applause at the end of this opening piece assured the band that they were among friends (thankfully!) and went on to perform a set lasting almost two hours. Perhaps the main surprise of the evening - at least for those more familiar with Landmarq's live show - was the encore number, 'Pinewood Avenue'. After quite a long period of not performing this particular song, it was re-worked to the extent of a key-change and re-arrangement of the song in order for Tracy and the band to be comfortable with it. This was all done in only the two weeks since the previously-mentioned Astoria gig.

A number of people had travelled some distance to see Landmarq, from as far afield as Chichester, Northampton, Hertfordshire and Essex. On talking with members of the audience after the show and hearing some very nice compliments, the band felt that they had succeeded in giving another good performance. Towards the end of the evening came the now traditional 'sing-along-a-Summer Madness' where Tracy does the round of band introductions.
Landmarq would also like to extend it's appreciation to Denny and Chas at the Hermit Club and also Steve, Gary and Vanya from Volt Music, Brentwood.

LANDMARQ FOR BELGIUM FESTIVAL

Confirmation has now been received for Landmarq to appear at the annual ‘Paulusfeesten’ music festival held each Summer in Oostende, Belgium. The date will be Sunday 15th August 1999. The band will be due on stage at 9:00pm local time and it is expected the set will be around 1 hour 15 minutes in length. No further details are available at this time, although we understand the festival lasts about 6 days (beginning earlier in the week), Sunday being the final day. The festival actually covers various forms of music including Blues and Jazz as well as Rock. We shall try to find out more about this event ASAP.

‘Highlands’ magazine

French Prog-rock magazine Highlands (l’actualite du rock progressif) has a feature biography of Landmarq in it’s latest issue (No.7, April 1999) with Tracy, Dave and Steve (Leigh) gracing the front cover. Very nice! The article by Didier Gonzalez traces the history of the band from it’s beginnings to the present day and also gives mention to various other connections individual band members have, including drummer Daves’ involvement with Janison Edge and Tracys’ appearance on the Jabberwocky project.

GIG REPORT
WITH THRESHOLD AT LONDON ASTORIA (LA2)
Sunday 21st February 1999

Set-list:
Intro - opening to Cutting Room; The Vision Pit; Heritage; Science Of Coincidence; Medley: excerpts from Ta' Jiang & Narovlya; The Overlook; Between Sleeping And Dreaming; Lighthouse; Summer Madness.

This was Landmarq's first gig of '99 and what better way to kick off the year than with a night as special guests of the bands old friends, Threshold. A sizeable and very enthusiastic crowd showed up to see what was, for many, their first Landmarq gig since Tracy had joined the band.
The set was honed down to one hour for this particular night and aside from the opening excerpt from "Cutting Room" and the medley of parts of "Ta' Jiang" & "Narovlya", from earlier albums, the band mainly featured songs from "Science Of Coincidence".

A number of the bands' friends and neighbours were also at the gig, including Clive Nolan (Arena, Shadowland, etc.), Pete Banks (ex-Yes), ex-Landmarq vocalist Ian 'Moon' Gould (Medicine Man), Mike Varty & Sue Element (Janison Edge).
From the bands point of view it was, sadly, all over far too quickly and the feeling at the end of the set was that things had gone over very successfully. The audience showed their appreciation right from the start and had there been time, there would most certainly have been an encore.
Landmarq play next on Friday 5th March at the Hermit Club, Brentwood, Essex, where they will be playing a longer set and featuring more material from earlier albums.
